Mayfair

Mayfair has historically remained one of the most expensive districts in London. Some historians claim the Romans started building and construction in Mayfair. However, major development began after Sir Thomas Grosvenor took charge of the land, in 1677. In 1721, building and design specialist surveyor Thomas Barlow was tasked with designing the area’s street layout. Today, this remains largely intact, with Grosvenor Square as its centrepiece. Following the economic decline after World War I, many luxury properties were converted into embassies. More recently, the district has become increasingly commercial.
