St James’s

In the 1100s, a leper hospital dedicated to Saint James the Less was established on the site now occupied by St James’s Palace. However, it was in the late 17^th century that development rights were granted by Charles II to Henry Jermyn, 1^st Earl of St Albans, and development in St James’s really began. Over the centuries, the residential areas of St James’s became the preserve of the aristocracy. Today, St James’s Palace, Clarence House and others serve as official royal residences, bearing testimony to the area’s past.
